Video DownloadHelper and DRM-protected video
If a video refuses to download and shows as protected, the reason is almost always DRM. Here is what that means and why no extension can legitimately get around it.
SHORT ANSWERDRM (Widevine/FairPlay/PlayReady) encrypts streams at the platform level. Video DownloadHelper will not — and cannot — bypass it, and neither can this site. Our tools only detect and explain protection.
What DRM is, briefly
DRM (Digital Rights Management) encrypts a video and gates the decryption key behind a licensed player. Major subscription services use it deliberately so content cannot be saved as a plain file.
How you can tell
- The extension shows no downloadable stream, or only a protected manifest.
- An .mpd file contains a ContentProtection element (Widevine, PlayReady, etc.).
- The player is from a paid streaming service.
What we will not do
We will not help strip or bypass DRM. That is copyright circumvention and is outside both the law and this site’s scope. Our MPD analyzer will clearly tell you a stream is protected instead of pretending to work.
Legitimate alternatives For content you have the right to keep, use the provider’s own offline/download feature where offered.
