Because it is a browser extension rather than a standalone program, “downloading the software” really means adding it from the store. Once added, the developer’s free companion helper app may prompt to install on desktop only if you use the conversion features — that is a normal part of the official flow, not a bundled extra.
How to spot a copycat or fake
- Check the publisher. The genuine listing is published by the extension’s developer (SAS ACLAP) — not “Free Downloads Ltd” or similar.
- Check the URL. Only trust chromewebstore.google.com, addons.mozilla.org, or microsoftedge.microsoft.com for the add-on itself.
- No installers on random sites. Any page offering a downloadable .exe/.msi “for Video DownloadHelper” is either a different product or a bundleware trap. Don’t run it.
- Look at the icon + review counts. The real extension has millions of users; a look-alike has a handful.
